Foreign residents gaming the daycare system: is there any truth to this?

Screen Shot 2013-06-30 at 8.56.00 AM

This is a comment I received on my blog earlier this year.  I haven’t been able to get it out of my head.  It was in reaction to an Absurd Vancouver Property post I had written.   I’m wondering how much truth there is to the commenter’s claim that families are “gaming” the system to achieve government subsidies for their childcare?   Read more…

On the road with my June Food.ee Snackbox

Junesnackbox

Last weekend I headed over to beautiful Parksville, British Columbia to participate in a QR Code rally (you’ll find out more about what that involved in an upcoming post).  How appropriate that my June Snackbox from Food.ee arrived the day we were leaving!  In it were lots of amazingly healthy, road-worth snacks to bring along for the trip! Absurd Vancouver Property (June 27, 2013)

This week a little diversion from the norm.

People say that both art and real estate are good investments.  However, I often look at both and can’t understand how or why the f*%k people spend what they do on either.  For example…

Do they even like me?

72936_10151565220065907_141221982_nSometimes I feel like I’m so busy bossing, nagging, directing, pulling, dressing, hair-brushing, lunch-making, refereeing, coaching, bed-making, laundry folding, laundry folding and laundry folding that I am not REALLY spending time with my kids…and sometimes I think I must be a really nasty, boring, bee-otch to be around.

Just the other night, I was sitting with my husband and wondered out loud…”do you think they even like me?”  Such a strange thing to ask, right?  I mean, I know they love me.  Kids love unconditionally.  But, do they like me?  Am I fun to be around?  Do I make them laugh?  Are we “close”?  Please tell me I’m not the only crazy person who thinks about this stuff…*crickets*

Here’s the thing.   Read more…

Momcabulary Monday: boohoo make do

boohoo, make do [boo-hoo mayek do]

You’re house rich and cash poor…or you are in so much debt that you can’t afford to update your kitchen, wardrobe or really anything.  Well, boohoo make do.  Jeez, don’t be a crybaby.  Use what you have, be creative and make the best of it.  As moms we’re all going to go through a stage in life where nothing feels finished, everything is a work in progress and we just have to live with it.  Unless you’re rich – and in that case, boohoo f*%k you…

And don’t forget…wine makes everything better.

The only acceptable kind of cry baby, in my opinion.

Lazy Leftover Salmon Cakes

salmon cakes

I’m all for using up leftovers…and now that I’m semi-retired, I need to put our family on more of a budget when it comes to food.  Over the summer, I’m certain we will be preparing a lot of BBQ salmon.  It’s nutritious, inexpensive when you buy a large amount and…delicious.  However, we often have eyes bigger than our stomachs and make too much.  I’ve come up with this quick and easy way to use up the remains.
